Listened to a performance of Shostakovich's 1st Cello Concerto last night. I wonder if this influenced Apocalyptica in any way.

EDIT: Some research I did indicates that Shostakovich wrote the concerto for a particular cellist, who ended up being the tutor of the cellist in the below vids.
