Below is a collection of links that you may find useful. If you think
that there's something else that I should put up here, let me know.
People
- jerith
Jerith is probably the most talented programmer and most knowledgable
open-source geek that I know. Some of the PHP code on this site is his.
- rooijan
Rooijan goes to my church and is one of jerith's friends as well. Unfortunately
the content of his site is a little lacking.
- Edd
Edd is, well, Edd. He's really clever and organises the local BarCamps
as well.
- KaBaDaBrA
Chris (KaBaDaBrA) is one of the co-organisers of the Kontrol Alt Elite
LANs and one of my best friends. He's a professional web designer, so
his site looks quite nice... but it also suffers from a lack of content.
Update (July 2007) - Content appears to have vanished - just a default
domain hosting page there now. I'll retain this link for now, but if
it's still like this in a few months time, this link will be removed.
- neon_chameleon
Neon is one of the moderators over at the PCFormat forums and is a keen
local gamer. I recently found out that he has his own site, so he's
getting a link.
- DAE_JA_VOO
Ettienne Venter, aka "DAE_JA_VOO", is probably the most talented
modder in South Africa at the moment. He's recently launched his own
site dedicated to modding, which is more than worthy of a link here.
That, and the fact that I contributed to the famous Project Epiphany
by donating Ettienne a spare power supply of mine when he fried his
original one. :)
LANs
- FRAG LAN
This is the LAN that I help out at. If you want to come along, meet
me, and play a few games, you should check the site out for all the
information.
- LanGames
If you want to go to other LANs, this is an excellent place to start
looking.
IRC
- X-Chat
My IRC client of choice. Strangely, the Windows version is shareware
but the source code is released under the GPL, which means that it's
perfectly legal to compile your own Windows build. If you're not the
"compile it myself" type, you can download a free Win32 build
here.
- UnrealIRCd
The IRC server that I beta-test, and the most popular IRC server software
in use. Both the source code and Win32 build are released under the
GPL.
- ircservices
An implementation of network services (NickServ, ChanServ, etc) for
an IRC network. Just the source code here, Windows is not officially
supported. A lot of people were asking for a Windows build, so I did
something for them. Which brings us to our next link...
- IRC Services
Community
Unofficial support forums for ircservices, which I set up in 2004. It's
also where you'll find my Windows build of ircservices. I do however
recommend that you only use it if you really have no alternative - Linux
is so much better.
Programming / Hacking
- Teach Yourself
Programming In Ten Years
Peter Norvig, Google's Director of Search Quality, wrote this essay.
His recipe for programming success is worth close attention.
- Real
Programmers Don't Use Pascal
A letter to the editor of the July 1983 Datamation. Worth reading if
you're interested to know what programming was like 25 years ago. Those
programmers have a lot of my respect.
- How
To Become A Hacker
If you ever want to hack on some code, this is a must read. Note that
this is not the same as, say, hacking a bank, this is called cracking
and the differences between the two are clearly mentioned in this essay.
